Illinois DOT warns motorists of buckling roadways during heat wave

The Illinois Department of Transportation is alerting motorists that the pavement could start buckling at any time because of the heat.

According to an IDOT press release, a one-two punch of rainfall and extreme heat can wreak havoc on the roads. Extreme high temps and precipitation can cause the pavement to expand and buckle or blow out. Motorists should be cognizant of traffic slowing down and move over for emergency and maintenance crews, who will be monitoring the situation.

In June, a section of Minnesota Highway 36 buckled during a heat wave. The Minnesota DOT released a video showing cars lifted airborne as they drove over pavement that had succumbed to the extreme heat.
