Two Vancouver-area bridges will be toll free as of Sep 1.

The British Columbia government is eliminating the tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges. It’s a move that Premier John Horgan, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena and others in the British Columbia government claim will help make “life affordable” in the province.

Government estimates state the average commuter should save about $1,500 a year and commercial drivers should see a savings of about $4,500 annually.

The announcement has provoked controversy. Those against the decision call it reckless, leaving less money to spend on needed social programs. Others want to know how the debt from building the bridges will be paid off.
